When I took the pictures you'll see here (except the Stuart Motor Building picture, which I didn't take), I wasn't expecting to blog about them. I just wanted to text them to Mark. At first the building at the corner of Main and Mountain Streets seemed pretty typical for this area. Nice windows, brick. A couple of buildings, each a block away, are more architecturally interesting. The Stuart Motor Building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings, and both buildings have the same type of chimney at the back (which unfortunately doesn't show in this picture). The historical marker on the first building indicates that it housed a drug store for over 80 years, and then a law office. It's for sale now. I'm always on the lookout for an old building that might be perfect for a loft-style home above, and possibly a textiles business below, so I looked in the window.
The counters were to be expected, albeit a little awkward. Didn't expect this, though!

Hey, Laurie. There are a lot of times that we wish our moms - both keyboard musicians - were with us, and this was one of them.

Strange how that happened - right in the area you originally pinpointed. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Take a look at today's (Sat./Sun. May 21-22) Wall Street Journal, Off Duty Section. Cover story is titled A Blue Ridge Joy Ride. It involves a three-day road trip across the highlands of North Carolina and Tennessee taking full advantage of the Appalachian spring, with pit stops for waterfalls and hush puppies via US 74W and US 64 W. It also includes info about stops in the newly formed Crest of the Blue Ridge AVA. Reminds me that Virginia has a large AVA with quite a few wineries in beautiful countryside.

Hi, Nancy! I am just about to head out to a talk at the great independent bookstore downtown here in Winston-Salem, and I'll see if they carry the WSJ and if so, pick up a copy. (Of course the local paper is also a "Journal," so there are two "WSJ"s to choose between.) I forgot what the author I'm going to hear is speaking on, but I'm sure it will be a pleasurable surprise.
