TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY NEEDLEWORK AT THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN QUILTERS SHOW   (Cheri)

Not surprisingly, I'd found a quilt show to attend while Mark and I were in  Knoxville, Tennessee last week.

Although the dog who posed for this portrait was named Oliver, the quilt also looks a lot like our friends Ross and Judy's "Little Bear."

I'm not usually into a lot of earth tones in quilts, the detail on this next quilt blew me away.

Did you see the part about this being a five-year project??  This is an atypical quilt, since it has a lot of embroidery, but quilting is becoming a lot more inclusive of other hand arts.

I love any kind of tart berry, and I was really struck with this artist's color choices and workmanship:

I don't remember the exact size, but I believe the berries, all individually appliqued, are each about an inch wide.

This quilt was about life-sized:

There are a lot of ways to add detail to a quilt.  This woman used thread for both the quilted lines and each tiny bit of the bird's feathers!

Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the artist's statement on this one, but it was created by Angie Tustison, who lives in Arcata, California, where Mark has relatives.  Note that the sky is made up of many different pieced blocks!

Here are a couple of detail shots from a semi-traditional, appliqued quilt.  (You would have to have seen the rest of the artist's statement to "get" the spelling of her title.)

Finally, this entry - or rather the statement submitted with it - made me laugh . . . don't miss it at the bottom of this post!

Thank you very much. I loved seeing the quilts!

The first prize deserved it!

Keep sending any quilts that you see.

Love,
Marian

Ha! I'll never post all of them, Marian. I take 100's of quilt photos every year. So glad you enjoy them!

Beautiful quilts. Unbelievable workmanship. I can really relate to the "3 and 5 year project" statement. I also have relatives that live in Arcata, California. I love your blog.

Thank you for putting it together for us to enjoy.

How strange, Denise, that we both have Arcata connections. Even though we've both lived in CA, it was a long way from Arcata. So glad you enjoy the blog!!
