We went to the Durham Orange Quilters Guild's "The Threads That Bind Us" show a couple of weeks ago. I talked about both the town and some of the quilts in my last post here. When I saw the quilt above, I knew that I'd be blogging about the show. Here are some close-up views of it: There are even additional "ghost" women quilted into the background: Here's the artist's statement: The DOQG is the home guild for Susan Brubaker Knapp, a wonderful art quilter and host of Quilting Arts TV, available on PBS and at QuiltingDaily.com. This picture doesn't do justice to the beautiful paper lanterns quilt that she entered in the show, because you can't fully experience the depth of the color and pattern that she hand-applied to its surface: I also really appreciated the map quilt that she displayed: Here's a rabbit hole . . . you'll notice that she references Russia's incursion into Ukraine. I just have to mention how much I'm enjoying Bob Woodward's book War, out just this week, which does an extraordinary job of making that war understandable (motivations, international challenges in supporting the Ukrainians, etc.). Anyway, I'll close with a couple of blocks from a quilt made entirely from the silk of neckties: Many of us who have lived in Monterey County used to pick up offcuts from the Talbot's tie company, and then wonder what will we do with them? Oh, cut them into tiny pieces, twist the pieces around and create kaleidoscopes of line and color!
