THE MORE YOU TRAVEL, THE MORE WEIRD STUFF YOU SEE!     (Cheri)

I know, the picture doesn't match the title, but I had to put one of Mark and me up top, since our first date was 38 years ago today.  This one was a few years ago, in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens.

Soon I'll do a post on how we met, or "Why We're Living This Life."
Picture
We are camped in Hollywood, South Carolina, which is near Charleston, and let's just say not a bit like Hollywood, California.

Choosing RV parks is an interesting process. We usually try to avoid the ones that are aimed at the “anklebiter” - British term for children - crowd.

The one we stayed at near Hilton Head provided a good blend of amenities without too many of said anklebiters.  There was one group of three families – I’m guessing relatives, who all had children who played in the streets until late at night - but I could hardly blame them, as I thought about what fun it would be too have that freedom with your little cousins, 24/7.

Hopefully the parents were keeping a very strict eye on them, however, since this was only about 200 feet away:

"Do not swim with alligators"???

We are also very near Edisto Island.  If you are a devotee of cooking shows, you will recognize that as the home of "Delicious Miss Brown."  This trip is largely about scouting for future trips, so we won't get to that island this time, but I hope to in the future.

(Again, not matching the "weird stuff" theme, but in the we-will-absolutely-come-back-to category, is Beaufort, South Carolina.  I wasn't feeling great, so we spent a couple of hours and headed out, but I did get this picture.  I thought the woman was coming to set up an Instagram shot, but she just stayed and read for a short while.)

So back to the theme.  This was a quick shot of the back of a delivery truck, through the windshield of ours:

We got great ice cream at Joe's Ice Cream and Beverage Company, in Bluffton, SC.

Hmmm, you can't see from the picture that they're serving "boozy" ice cream.  I just had regular apple pie ice cream, which was outstanding.

Also saw this in Bluffton, outside a home/business:

Vulture, no?

We've been traveling through a lot of marshes or swamps, depending on whether you ask Mark or me.  Without the benefit of any dictionary or other educational aid, I would say the difference depends upon how many trees there are and the ability to see for distances across the grasses.  Mark points out that both were major impediments during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

I am learning about using cell phone data while on the road. I usually like to use our own data, rather than local networks, because I keep so many tabs and apps open that could be hacked. Apparently, however, Facebook, or similar apps tried to reach the rest of the world so many times while I was at the quilting retreat last week that I used all my data for the month, with no fun involved.  (“Boonies” isn’t the right word for where we were, but it was rather remote.)

Now I’m having to judiciously close a lot of apps in order to post here, or check Wordle for the day!

Great sharing. We enjoyed Beaufort years ago. Did you drive by the house where the “Big Chill” was filmed. ?
Would not want to have been a soldier dodging alligators and the enemy ! Not easy terrain. Ice cream sounds amazing !!

Hey Deb, Mark thinks he saw the Big Chill house. I mis-typed, but meant to say that I wasn't feeling well. I would loved to have seen it, as it is one of my two all-time favorite movies! We will definitely go back.

Absolutely LOVED Beaufort! Was there while traveling with Joan. The movie the Great Santini with Robert Duvall was filled there, as I recall.

Hi Donna! Beaufort has apparently been the base for many movies - The Great Chill and Prince of Tides also among them.

Wish you could have made it to Winston-Salem during this East Coast swing of yours.

Happy Anniversary !

I think that sculpture is a condor. But why?

The southern style homes are lovely. Thank you for all the fun photos.

I look forward to your next blog.
Love,
Marian

Hi Marian,

I often go down the rabbit hole with these details, but the difference between condors and vultures? Not happening!
