THE COLOR RED @ MID-ATLANTIC QUILT FESTIVAL   (Cheri)

I was lucky to attend the East Coast's largest quilt festival last month.

I'll post about a variety of different works - imagine that! - but this was the first thought I got organized.

The quilt above is by Caryl Bryer Fallert Gentry.  Funny; for years her style - while varied - was also so recognizable that I think it would have been hard to have her work anonymously judged.

Here is a representative sample of her work from 1997:

Now that she is semi-retired, and has moved to another area of the country, she focuses on equally-stunning photographic quilts.  Here is the artist's statement for the quilt above:

This was one of the quilts in the special exhibit by members of the international group Studio Arts Quilt Associates.

This quilt was my favorite in the exhibit:

I would like to be able to do work like this!  This artist's statement provided substantial food for thought:

(By the way, the statements are usually pinned to the large pieces of fabric hanging from bars, which flow in the capricious breezes, frustrating my attempts to obtain squared text!)

Here is another quilt with a very important artist statement.  I admire this work of this woman from California, but it doesn't usually speak to me; this time, after reading the statement, I was really taken with the piece!

Maybe because I, too, love this shade of red?  And the contrast with the blue?

Here is another really striking floral piece, very different from the one above:

And a detail shot to emphasize the difference in technique:

And another red-truck quilt, also originating with a photo, but this time digitally manipulated to look like a watercolor painting before being quilted:

I missed the artist's name and statement for this quilt, from a separate SAQA exhibit.  First the explanatory poster, and then the stunning interpretation:

It would be hard to continue with everyday things like trucks and lamps after seeing and reading about this quilt, so I placed it last:

Thank you for sharing! I loved every quilt. Amazing!

I am glad you saved the lamb for the last. I touched my heart.

This Exhibition for the East Coast was assembled from everywhere, so beautifully presented, Cheri!
Each of these selected for us to share is unique, created in different ways, for all different reasons. Red Truck, too!
Your favorite is mine, too; maybe every step by hand gives it life, and I see more than the colorful flowers...
Lovely!
Thank you for sharing!

Good to hear from you, Laurie! I think I like that quilt best because when she mentions each of the red items, I can see them, and I can see the whirl of their presence in her life, the quality they add. Take care!
