Mark and I visited two extraordinary places in San Francisco last year, places that we will re-visit every time we return. I had seen The Box SF advertised as a space for offsite corporate meetings, and classes, with a mention of antique paper for sale. Well, I like ephemera, so it was probably worth stopping by. Oh my!!! It was sooo much more than a vintage paper store. Mark and I took 179 pictures in this one place. How to winnow it all down?? I'll start with some of my favorite displays: Having posted these, I'll admit that the large display pictures that The Box SF has posted on its own site are more impressive, well worth the jump to their site to see them. (Yes, I am envying the equipment and time that that photographer had to achieve those pictures!) The building that The Box SF is in is a "former 'William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant.'" Not having had time to ask, I'm guessing that means that the printing performed there was commercial and/or advertising, rather than the newspapers themselves? There is a large corner on the main floor devoted to printing equipment. Here, just a few pictures. Individual pieces of type, for setting: I don't have the knowledge to describe how this might have been used, but I thought it was cool: A type-storage cabinet and a press: And a pile of bound newspapers! I asked about the price on the bound newspapers. They sell them by the page, which makes sense for them. I was disappointed, but truthfully, I have at least at least three large bound sets of magazines. More about my plans for them later.
Also, more about The Box SF in upcoming posts!
