SIGAL MUSIC MUSEUM     (Mark)

I was standing in front of a musical instrument that was actually played by Mozart; it brought on a feeling of history that is hard to explain.  If you are in Greenville, South Carolina, you can see this harpsichord, and a tremendous collection of other musical instruments.

When Marlowe Sigal was fourteen, his father acquired an old reed organ in need of repair.  His father told Marlowe that if he could fix it, he could have it. This began his interest in restoring and playing keyboard instruments, and history of instruments in general.  He continued to collect instruments for the next fifty years.

You can hear many of the instruments being played if you go to the museum's website, and if you take the tour as an interactive experience via your phone.  The collection of instruments is believed to have been the largest collection in the world.  Everything from tiny recorders to grand pianos are on display.  The number of instruments, and the variety, is amazing.

The detail on the instruments is incredible.  Particularly considering they were created by hand, not computer-assisted.

And I now know what a hurdy-gurdy is:

Lori,
Just inside of the museum entrance they have a Steinway grand piano anyone can sit down and play. While we were there a gentleman visit down and start playing very technical classical pianist while talking to his daughter about it.

It would be fascinating to be able to sit and watch the work being done by hand on these instruments. It really was incredible to see the artwork that went into every aspect of the construction.

Larry,
I would love to be able to sit in and listen to you having a conversation with the guys that did the woodwork, about how they did it, and what techniques and tools they use!
