PRIVATE D.C., ALSO IN TEXTILES     (Cheri)

We are waiting to get back on the road until my feet feel a little better, so I'm sharing more from an exhibit that I saw in February and March.

It's easy to forget that the District of Columbia and its surroundings is home to many people, or that there is nature in the area!  The quilts in this post show off residents' everyday life.

I wanted to include the detail photo above so that you could see the threadwork in the quilt; for example all of the greenery is created using free-motion zigzag stitching.

Here is another ode to the area's nature:

Some quilts that focus on communal life:

The quilt above is about marathon running - note the runners quilted into the background - but I like the map aspect of it, so here's a detail that focuses on the streets running among public buildings:

A Frank Lloyd Wright museum:

Do you see Wright himself quilted into the center-top of the quilt?

And the Cherrydale, VA volunteer fire department building:

Because I love architecture and average-guy history, I thought I would include an historic picture of that building, too:

All of the quilts in this post and my post from May 30 are included in the book Inspired by the Nation's Capital.

It's very nice to have a book that memorializes the quilters' work, but I will say that something about the photography presents a flattened viewpoint, which doesn't reflect the textural aspects of the artwork well.

Cheri,
It’s hard for me to visualize nature in that busy area, but these are beautiful art quilts!
Just curious….Do you remember what method was used for the figures in Marketplace? Paint is my guess unless it’s printed fabric?

Hey Paula, I don't exactly remember . . . ended up taking some of the pix in a real rush on my last day there. It looks to me like the figures may have been cut from a very active print?
