OUR FIRST TRIP TO KNOXVILLE     (Mark)

We decided to take a short trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, as Cheri had a quilt show she wanted to see.  We decided to take the Mini Cooper rather than the travel trailer and truck.  As we settled into the AirBnB I was watching the clouds build up to the east of us.

We reserved a cute little place.

The next morning the little cabin we had rented looked like this.

The reason the room was so arranged is about 10:30 PM Cheri said she thought she heard water, and boy was she right. The water was flowing in under both the front and side doors.  I spent the next two hours moving and stacking furniture, and pushing water back out of the cabin using a broom.

Those clouds had parked over the top of us and delivered between 1 1/2” and 2” rain in an hours’ time.  The trip had turned into more of an adventure than we first thought it would be.

While Cheri saw the quilt show, I meandered.

This mail box alone would have been enough to get me to stop to take a picture.  But it happened to be the mailbox for something interesting, a real bonus.

This piece of property is actually currently for sale.

I doubt the old style pumps still have any ethyl for sale, but I did not actually check them to see.  I have always liked the gravity-style pumps, which move the number of gallons you want to buy into the top glass tank, then watch it flow into the car.

When traveling with Cheri you can be sure of her awareness of where the nearest architectural salvage shop will be.

For a photographer it does mean you will have lots of subjects posing for pictures.

And since I like texture and history the salvage yards generally deliver.

Appendix from Cheri . . . wish I had taken a picture of the poster from a concert which had Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez all on the same bill!  (Probably in 1984.  If you check Google, it was a pretty unhappy experience, for Baez, at least.)

The cabin is charming. So much rain that it flows into the cabin is amazing!
The gasoline pumps remind me of my grandfather who had one on his property. He had the first flush toilets, telephone, electricity, Ford truck, and solar panels that heated water in his town on Kauai. The gasoline pump was removed when I was about three.

Airplane shaped building! Wow!

I had hoped to see a few quilts, Cheri.

Hi Marian, I imagine that all of those items were indicators that your grandfather was one of the respected elders of the community!

I am going to do my own post, probably on Thursday, and talk about downtown and quilts that I saw. Thanks for your enthusiasm about the quilts.

1. Did you get some of your money back from Air BNB?
2. Love the airplane filing station building! A curiosity for sure, but seems it has nothing to do with airplanes. Was there any manufacturing of planes or an airfield nearby?
3. Is the gold still kept in Knoxville?

Cheri spent quite a bit of time on the phone, no we did not have to pay. About 1/2 of the US gold reserves are still kept at Fort Knox. Lockheed Martin has some manufacturing in the area as well as some other aerospace concerns, but I do not know how much was being done in earlier times, I will have to do some research…

We also drove through and around Oak Ridge for just a little bit, I guess I should have rented a Geiger Counter!

And here I thought you two were cozy in your forest home, while all the rainstorms passed you by!
Adventures were clearly worth the trip, and the Airplane mailbox and gas station, with Texaco, make me smile! Thank you!

Laurie,
So glad to hear from you, I miss seeing your wonderful smile! We are continuing to explore, having such a wonderful time with our time now. Still amazed at how green things are here in the Southeast.
