We started off the day a little later than some might, and we ended up in But the little café we stopped in had just stopped serving breakfast, which is what we really wanted. We settled for a couple of sandwiches, figuring we would find some ice cream a little later. We spent a few minutes in town and saw a couple of interesting things. Cheri loved this: and I am a sucker for old signs: While we wandered around the town we saw a sign for Murray Mills. We decided to head in that general direction, seeing the sights as we went. We arrived at the Mills and I immediately was happy; lots of things to photograph. They actually run the mill about once a month as a demonstration, and they sell the flour and grits they grind that day. I will try to get back one of the days they are doing this as I would love to see the water wheel working and watch the machinery in motion. We were in luck when we went into the store. They had ice cream made locally for sale! They only had about six flavors available, but it is some of the best ice cream I have had in quite a while. I recommend the cookie dough. I believe Cheri thinks the strawberry would be the best flavor. Inside the store was local honey and canned goods and other interesting things. The historical association that runs the Murray's Mill Historic District had done a great job of printing copies of original labels for the cans. It was a perfect temperature and day for walking, I could easily have spent the entire day wandering around. After we left the Mill we continued wandering the back roads. I saw the sign for this too late to initially turn in so I had to backtrack a bit, but it was worth it. The bridge is fascinating if you are interested in architecture and construction as it is the only wooden bridge of this type in the world. You can do some internet research about the gentleman who built this and the type of construction he used on this particular bridge, which I find very interesting. All in all a lot of fun just wandering around the North Carolina backroads.

Thank you for the compliment on the storyboard format; Cheri does all the heavy lifting on the website! I get to take pictures and do my short captions then hand her the thumb drive...

The store signs and the inside of the store are very interesting. I am glad that you saw the bridge and gave us some details about it.

The history of the mill would take a fair amount of time for me to try and describe, but the link to their site lets you explore as much as you would like. I really want to get back on a day they are running the mill to watch the water wheel in motion. Also to buy some fresh ground grits.

We've grown up around the Covered Bridge in Felton, Mark, but could never imagine running trains through it like this one!
