A while after Mark and I moved to North Carolina, I thought about which state felt like "home" to me, and I came to a similar conclusion:  home is where Mark is.

This one made us laugh.  Education is grand, but wealth and family connections go a long ways, too!

Nevertheless, most of the quotes and pictures that I'm sharing here emphasize the commonalities between George and Barbara Bush and the rest of us.

This is the quote that Mark referenced yesterday.

It would be interesting to know why the Bushes chose to live so frugally when they first moved to Texas.  The car they drove down was certainly not inexpensive.  I remember reading elsewhere, however, that one home they lived in was a duplex, and Barbara came to the realization that the woman who lived on the other side was a prostitute.

A picture of young "Georgie":

Here's one that isn't about commonalities, but is definitely interesting.  At the time that Bush first ran for Congress, winning as a Republican certainly wasn't guaranteed!

A bit of "I want to be like Dad":

A quote about the 1992 Presidential campaign:

Another difference:  most grandkids don't get to play in the situation room.

The caption below this said "After a hurricane hit [the family compound on] Walker's Point, Former C.I.A. Director Robert Gates described the scene this way:
'. . . we could see that their most treasured belongings - family pictures, mementos . . . were either lost to the sea or strewn all over the grounds,
most of them ruined.  The entire seaward side of the house had been
gouged open by the waves and the wreckage was everywhere.  But
George Bush didn't flinch.  His jaw tight, the President of the United States put on waterproof pants, grabbed a shovel, and set about
salvaging what he could of his home."
I am definitely not a fan of a lot of the Bushes' political views, but this quote from a letter that President Bush 41 included in a letter to Saddam Hussein is hopefully a sentiment that we can all agree with:
Picture
Bush 41 was an inveterate letter.  I read a book of his letters years ago, which he allowed to be prepared instead of writing an autobiography (which he felt would be too self-aggrandizing).  I highly recommend it.

Finally, this basically has nothing to do with the Bushes, but I like the labels on these cans outside the Library.  A great way to emphasize what happens if you don't recycle!

I enjoyed all of the quotes that you recorded. Thank you.

I did not know that the Bush home was destroyed.
