The trailer is hitched to the truck, the cats are in their carrier in the truck, and we are ready to go.

After a fairly short drive we ended up here.  We are the only people camping on site.

We are at the JJJ Conference Center.  Cheri has a quilting retreat here for the next several days.  About 30 other quilters will be attending.  Very nice looking building and facilities.

We are in Mocksville, North Carolina, where Daniel Boone grew up.  His father was Justice of the Peace here.

Both of his parents are buried here.  The town has a small historic downtown, and is the county seat of Davie County.

As with many other places in North Carolina, some significant Civil War history is attached to the area.  I just finished the book Mounted Raids of the Civil War, by Edward G. Longacre.  I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in Civil War history.

I wandered around the town taking photos of vignettes that caught my eye.  These were from an old service station converted to an eatery:

Gas stations converted to other uses are common around here.  Over time you will be able to see other posts about old gas stations by clicking on "Gas Stations" under "Categories" at the right.

An old bench was nearby.  By the way Cheerwine is not an alcoholic drink, just a soda.  According to Wikepedia, “Cheerwine is a cherry-flavored soft drink by Carolina Beverage Corporation of Salisbury, North Carolina.  It has been produced since 1917, claiming to be 'the oldest continuing soft drink company still operated by the same family.'"  (We go to Salisbury, which is just under an hour from home, more often than we otherwise would because Cheri's favorite NC ice cream is made there!)

I found another bench made from an old pickup bed.  Here is the back:

And on the wall of a nearby building:

Further south I stopped at the Colin Creek Golf Course.  Originally built in 1968, it was recently rescued by two Winston-Salem physicians.   Colin Creek is comprised of 12 holes, each offering golfers of all ability levels a unique challenge.

Prefer to play 18?  The first six holes feature a separate set of tees offering a different angle and approach. Play six, 12, or 18 – Colin Creek Golf Club allows you to tailor your round to meet your needs and preferences.

I played 18 holes in perfect weather, and had a wonderful time.

Really enjoying your travel blog and pics. Thanks for the clear shot of the history panel; I enjoy learning about history. Are you going to have a category for "Ice Cream" soon? I want to see where all the favs are.

I was thinking about an "Ice Cream" category, Donna, and with your urging, I've added it. <G>

You have a lovely home.
My dream is to own a home with a wrap around front porch like the Daniel Boone photo. Maybe in Heaven?
I am enjoying your blog very much. Thank you.
Cheri, I hope you took photos of quilts to share.

Hi Marian, Wouldn't it be fun if everyone could have the home of their dreams in heaven? I would spends months just touring all the houses!

I have been taking pix of quilts. When there aren't a lot from individual shows, I keep them to do posts by subject . . . many to come.
