Looking at Barney - in black and white no less - you may have already guessed we were back in "Mayberry," also known as Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Cheri was doing quilting-related things in a quilting-related store, it was 67 degrees with a little breeze blowing, and I had my camera battery charged up. Time to go for a walk, get some photographs, and explore. I made sure not to duplicate scenes from our February 14 post. There was a row of Art Deco carved animals at the top of the building across the street: Since my first photo was of Barney, I should have a picture of his transportation: This particular feline was very curious, and watched me for quite some time. I imagine it is not too unusual to see someone wandering around with a camera, but it was a Wednesday . . . maybe a slow tourist day. The downtown has a number of painted musical instruments. This particular one was dedicated to Floyd E. Rees, and the artist was Kayla Ellis. They really do brighten up the sidewalks. Other little touches are painted mailboxes on the side of some of the buildings: We love seeing the barn quilts, and quilts people paint on the sides of structures here. They really do add a splash of color contrasted to the brick. Fred Cockerham, Tommy Jarrel, and Ralph Epperson are sitting on the sidewalk ledge where they can watch the tourist walk by: Fred and Tommy are musicians. Ralph started WPAQ, first broadcasting on Groundhog Day, 1948. You can still tune in at 740 on the AM dial if you are in the area. If not, you can listen live anywhere in the world through the wonder of the internet. When we were in Mt. Airy in February, I stopped in here and had a specialty key made. I did not stop in today, but I did get a photo I was unable to get last time: About this time Cheri texted me letting me know she was ready to leave the quilting establishment and get some lunch. As I was walking to meet Cheri I saw this doorway. I hope no one walks out in a hurry! Before wandering home, we had an excellent lunch at Leon's Burger Express: Image Source: Yelp

The art deco carvings are great. I like paintings of the musical instrument and the one on the mailbox.

The carvings were my contribution to the post, Marian. I'd taken a picture of the entire row, but somehow all of my pictures got deleted in my transfer from phone to laptop.

This post was very interesting with all the details of the little town. I was fascinated by how the artist of the three guys on a bench incorporates the brick appearance on the figures. When we come out to see you I’d like to visit Mt. Airy!

Hey Judy, We already have it on our list for your visit! The brick effect was definitely what caught my eye, too.
