LIFE AT "09"     (Mark)

"09" is how we refer to our pending house, as opposed to "40," where we are living now, since the houses are a quarter-mile apart, and have same two beginning address numbers.

We have just given our design input to an architectural designer for our new house and look forward to that process.  In the meantime, this simple-looking enclosure may not actually look like much, but it has taken a lot of sweat and toil to get to this point.

The fence is protecting our little garden:  tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant, okra, cucumbers, watermelon, herbs, and a few other things.

The wire, fence posts, and funny looking gate, an old tractor implement, have all been recovered from the jungle surrounding our house.  I have been continuing to work on clearing the 7 acres. I think I am slowly gaining on it, maybe!

As I was clearing brush I found this tractor furrow leaning against the tree, completely covered in ivy.  This picture was taken after much clearing and cutting of brush.

The weather has been cooperating very nicely:  warm breezy days, not hot yet, but I know it is coming.  From where I am standing taking this picture, you could not see the house before clearing the underbrush.

I had been talking with Cheri about needing a little cart to drag behind the lawnmower, but I did not like how much they cost.  Two days later I found this in the ivy.  I will replace the wheel bearing and tires, sand and paint it, then build a simple bed when we return from our current trip.  I am very happy to save the money and not have to buy one.

I wonder what the story behind this car is.  I am just getting cleared up to it; one of the reasons I need a little cart is for hauling stuff like this around.

I am also uncovering many bird houses.  This one is a double-decker:

I am hoping as I get some of these uncovered the birds will be able to use them again.

It takes a lot of mowing to keep the grass in check.  This is significantly less than half of the driveway and lawn area to mow.

Luckily I have this to use:

I was driving this from "09" to "40" the other day to mow the lawn and get lunch before heading back.  My next-door neighbor texted me about how he liked both of our orange sport cars.  I think Cheri’s Mini Cooper is a lot faster, but the wind blows through my hair better on this one!

Looking good Mark...seems like you will not have to go to a gym for a long time!

Hey Kathy,
I have followed some of the continuing progress you have made on your ranch, and some of the weather mitigation efforts you have made. It really does look great. Our 7 acres is on the original homestead of the dairy that was divided up in the 1980’s. All of the houses in the area were built after that. The house we are living in is at one end of the old property, the project house at the other end. Really good to hear from you.

Dear Mark and Cheri, I’m so very happy for you!
Your home and garden, so lush right now, look like the perfect landing spot for you! The work that keeps you busy will yield beautiful vistas and good things to eat; I can hardly wait to see the garden during Summertime!
Your picture of the house, past flowering shrubs, seems idyllic.
The neighbor sounds like a keeper, too!
Thank you for sharing!

Laurie,
The number of birds we listen to every morning and evening is staggering. I will have to take a little audio to send you when we return from Kentucky. We have wonderful neighbors, three neighbors watching each property when we are not home.

I am enjoying seeing the progress that you are making on your new property. You will be very trim with all the hard labor.

Your place is lovely.

Marian,
I do not think I will ever be in the trim category, Cheri is much too good of a chef…

Lana,
I am trying to do a better job of chronicling the work on the house. I am hoping Cheri will get a chance to talk with the former owner about the history of the property. I have a little history gathered from the neighbors, some local volunteer firefighters who are excellent car and truck mechanics, Wilson’s Garage, and a local golf course owner.

Missed something here - thought you said you were going to retire?

Ingrid,
Cheri wants to keep me busy so I do not get into much mischief… I feel retired because for the first time in a LOT of years I am actually getting a full nights sleep every night. Life is good!

With the weather gets too hot for him to work, you can send them to my place for a vacation. I will only work him four hours a day, which will seem like a vacation to him.

Hey brother,
Cheri keeps a list of both inside and outside tasks.

Hmmm, not sure why Mark mentioned that . . . meaning I would never forget, even if he left town? Anyway, you lie! We see, you work long, long hours, too, even outside.

"My next-door neighbor texted me about how he liked both of our orange sport cars."
Well, your "sports car" is a step up from your old US Mail Jeep! Can you tell what brand or model that old rusted car is? You don't need to travel to seek adventure--looks like you have it in your own back yard!
