Elkin has interesting history in the Revolutionary War. The town square was used as a collection and gathering point for the Overmountain Men, Patriots who gathered here and then marched to battle. The most noted battle was at Kings Mountain. After marching 30 miles at night, the Overmountain Men joined with other Patriots to decisively defeat the British and Loyalists. During the Civil War Stoneman’s Raid, which I have mentioned in earlier posts, passed through Elkin. The manufacturing, mills, ironworks were powered by the river and the waterworks, a nod to renewable energy! Elkin was an important crossroads in its time, and because of this, history is threaded throughout the town. And the town has a number of murals painted on various wall of buildings. A great place for photography on a sunny day as we walked through town.
