DRIVING THROUGH PITT, WILSON, & GREENE COUNTIES, NC     (Mark)

We had the opportunity to drive through three counties just to see the countryside.

For our California readers, the counties here are smaller.  North Carolina has 100 counties covering 48,000 square miles.  California has 58 counties for 156,000 square miles.

Now that the classroom portion of the lecture is done, this was where my day started:  about 40 yards from our trailer.

It was a wonderful place to start the day.  I spent some time trying to convince a 1" long baby salamander to hold still for a photo without success.

I did get a picture of a fisherman floating by on the current:

It is possible we stopped at a certain ice cream establishment early on our trip, just saying.

A little further down the road this building was at the intersection of two country highways.  Someone has been taking care of this building and keeping the paint fresh:

Just a bit further down the road was a building that had slightly more tired paint:

This former house was slowly being returned to nature:

but this house is further along the process:

Then we came to this structure.  It took a minute to figure out this had been a one-room schoolhouse. I believe it was built high above the ground to withstand flooding; it was pretty near a creek.  Cheri tried hard to get some information about it, with no success.

If you are tilting your head looking at the picture above do not worry.  The horizon is level, the building and stairs are not.

One of the better photographers I have ever met, named Tommy, had a wonderful take on buildings like this:  “It definitely could use a coat of paint.”

Just behind the schoolhouse are the modern facilities.  A two-seat unit with excellent ventilation:

Thank you again, Mark, for sharing peace and beauty again, at the end of my day, and making me laugh several times, too! You write your stories of travels with such ease, I can always imagine I’m there!
Cheri’s picture of you in the quilting shirt she made for you is a keeper! Watch the weather, and keep on making every day count!
Cheers to both of you,
Laurie

Laurie,
We are having a wonderful time having the time to explore together. Having so much we have never seen around us is really very special. Hopefully you are still enjoying the birds singing outside your patio.

Oh, Mark . . . You filled my heart with the comment about "Tommy". Thank you! It brought back so many loving memories. How he loved you boys! Thank you for the joy laughter and adventure you brought into his life. He would return home full of stories and antidotes. And I always knew he was in very good hands with the three of you looking after him.

Fondly, Teri

Teri,
I still think of Tommy quite frequently. I do miss the Hardy boys adventures through the west. Ross and I still text back and forth, and often it will bring up such fantastic memories and stories involving Tommy.

I really enjoyed seeing all of the buildings in their state of decay.
Thank you for sharing this blog. Continue to have a great time.
Love,
Marian

It has been very interesting seeing how different things in the west decay compared to the southeast. The jungle definitely takes over quickly in the southeast!
