COMING FEATURE:  OUR NEXT HOME     (Cheri)

So I "teased" the other day that we are under contract to buy our permanent home.  Here is a picture of it now, and after the jump, an inspiration picture, showing what we want it to look like.

So the question might be, why not start fresh, rather than making such dramatic changes?  It's the timeless principle:  location, location, location.

The house is only a quarter-mile from our existing house, and it's on a seven-acre infill lot.  Since there is a lot of growth going on in Winston-Salem, any new construction is almost certain to be surrounded in the future by lots of new houses, type and size currently unknown.

Here are pictures of the back deck and view:

and the overhead view:

You can't actually see the house in this picture, but it's at the end of the very long driveway.  Most of the meadow in the middle will be ours, and the meadows to the right of the driveway will be, too.

We love rolling views, but don't want to build on rolling land because we want a single-story house.  We can extend the front of the existing house, but still see across the rolling large meadow.

There are two lots included behind the house which we can sell when the market is right, to defray the cost of construction, and we could also sell one of the smaller meadows if we want.

We thought that we were just going to be submitting a back-up offer, and this happened very quickly.  Now all we have to do is develop a floor plan and find a design-build contractor, preferably before escrow closes in five weeks.

Hoping you all enjoy your long weekend.

Good luck with the renovation of the home you chose. How long will it take? Where will you live while it is being done.

The acreage is very large and beautiful! I am eager to see more.

Hi Marian, I don't know how long it will take! We have to develop a floor plan, find a contractor, etc. We will continue to live where we are while this is happening, but since it so close, we can watch it all very carefully. I'll talk more about it later, but this was almost a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Hey Barbara, great to hear from you! I didn't know you were reading the blog. What was it that prompted your move to the Southwest??

I wouldn't miss reading what you two are doing. We looked in Bend, Sequim, Walla Walla and here in Sun City West. What pulled us here was that Ed still had younger grandchildren here and we wanted to watch them, and be with them, as they grew up. Well they are all grown now! We do find it is hotter than a firecracker about 5 months a year....a huge change for us and one we have not really adjusted to. I used to see your Facebook posts prior to your move.....and we would tag recipes back and forth so when you moved I was happy to follow what you two were doing. It sounds like you have found a lovely place to live. What pulled you two to N. Carolina?

Barbara, I don't have your email address. Send it to me and we can chat?

I LIKE IT! I like it so much, Mark and Cheri!
This couldn't be better, because you've been so happily finding favorite places near where you are, and your current house has been privately nestled near a forest, very peacefully.
I thought you might miss it!
Your new house will give you two the chance to team up in familiar ways, with floor plans, colors, textures, lighting, comforts, already shown in your picture, plus the VIEWS! Wonderful!
I'm looking forward to Cheri's new kitchen, maybe quilting,
photography, and reading areas... and Mark getting his hands on earth-moving and building equipment again! Haybale garden? What fun!
Thank you oh-so-much for your delightful updates!
Good luck!

Laurie

Hey Laurie, such supportive comments! Yes, there are so many aspects that will be enjoyable. I haven't been gardening much here, but am really looking forward to doing it there, because I can *create* new areas, rather than merely maintaining someone else's idea.

It's been funny looking at design ideas, because Mark is like "I don't care if it's saleable down the road, I'll be dead by then," and I'm all "What if we *have* to sell it some day?!"

Mark and Cheri, the newly remodeled house plan picture showw such an elegance in how it fits into your landscape; I'm very impressed!
I like the way you plan to keep that splendid Redwood tree, and
hope it all goes smoothly for you, with Fall as an excellent time to rebuild!
Thank you for bringing good cheer!

It looks like you have found paradise. We are so happy for you;
The home is truly magnificent. How many guests did you say you
could accommodate?
I give special d iscounts to couples' rebuilding or renovatig a home. It is very stressful but I am sure you will deal with it in a calm fashion

Oh, Ann, that's funny about the discount (and oh, so humane)!

The down side is the time it will take to revamp. I'm telling myself that the time it will take to develop a plan, hire professionals, etc., will be the same period of time for difficulties with the supply chain to resolve themselves. We'll see.

*Much* love to you and Peter.

Hi Cheri and Mark,
So exciting for you two! Bob and I designed and built a house in Garland, Texas, in the 1990s, with the help of -- oh, let's see -- a designer and a builder. They were a married couple and rarely agreed on anything. They were astounded that Bob and I agreed on nearly everything. We enjoyed that house so much.

Best of luck to you as you embark on this adventure!

Hi Lana!

That's funny that your team couldn't agree with each other. I think Mark and I will do well, too.

"Design-build" in the construction industry means an architect is on the staff of the contractor, so they are jointly responsible. This is what I want. Unfortunately, around here it can mean a decorator and a contractor. I want to make my own decorating choices . . . every single one of them!!!

Sorry you had to leave the Texas house, but glad we met you.

Grins, Cheri
