The nice thing about being retired is that Friday seemed like a good day to take a drive, so we did.

If you've been reading our blog for a while, you know that I like to quilt in the North Carolina mountains in late September.
We have not been able to do a drive exploring the area for quite some time, but we decided we needed some ice cream, so off we went.
Mark and I had planned to go to Asheville, NC on September 26th or 27th, so that I could go to the local, highly-recommended quilt show.
In case what's a curiosity to me isn't to you, I've added some beautiful flowers to pull you into this last post about the Raleigh Arboretum!
We had planned to attend a street fair in Cary, North Carolina, near Raleigh, but decided against it when I reviewed the types of crafts that would be displayed.
The 10 Acre Arboretum and botanical garden is administered by North Carolina State University.

Returning from a quick trip to Virginia, Cheri was navigating using one of our large atlases.
Surprise! I know it has been quite some time since I last posted, but life can get in the way of travel.
Happy New Year to everyone! We decided to get in one last road trip of 2023, a short drive to Salisbury, NC.
Cheri spent two intensive days comparing sewing machines for quilting, which left me time to roam around the 14th most populous county in North Carolina.
I've been encouraging Cheri to spend some time shopping so that she can replace her 20+ year-old sewing machine. She wanted to do that a few hours from home, at a place we found last year when touring North and South Carolina on a quilt "shop hop."
Members of the "stadium" quilt guild that I belong to trekked to the northwest corner of the state last week to quilt in a lovely mountain lodge, located in Valle Crucis, N.C.
No kidding, the trip was really all about ice cream, but we were lucky and also found a fixed-in-time relic that I'd been looking for almost since we moved here. (Image Source: TripAdvisor.com)
As I mentioned yesterday, the big draw of my trip yesterday was a joint presentation by the author Jan Karon and quilter Georgia Bonesteel in the town of Hudson, North Carolina.
I headed out in the fog/steam yesterday morning for a day of travel through the western edge of North Carolina's Piedmont region. Image Credit: https://www.blueridgeheritage.com
Looking at Barney - in black and white no less - you may have already guessed we were back in "Mayberry," also known as Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
