Outside of not-really musing about moving back to San Francisco, Mark and I never envisioned moving to a bigger city/area when we retired.

I’ve been a fan of the HGTV show Home Town since its inception, so being able to head back to North Carolina through Laurel, Mississippi was a great opportunity.

A SPRIG OF LAUREL, MISSISSIPPI     (Mark)

Laurel, Mississippi is home to the oldest art museum in Mississippi.  Approximately 18,000 people live in town, and it is the county seat for Jones County.  In 1881 the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad was laid down, and in 1882 the town started growing around the railroad.  The main reason for the town was a primitive sawmill, which processed the native longleaf yellow pine.

LOUISIANA TO MISSISSIPPI     (Mark)

Happy New Year to everyone.  Not many photos today as we were traveling from Alexiandria, LA to Laurel, MS.  There was a very dramatic difference in geography crossing the Mississippi River on Highway 84, heading east.  The Louisiana side is low and muddy everywhere, not paved or graveled.  The Mississippi side is the city of Natchez, built on high bluffs that keep the river at bay.  The terrain immediately becomes rolling hills with evergreen and some hardwood forest.

Otis Redding died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967.  Three days earlier he recorded the song (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay.  He wrote the lyrics and music sitting on a houseboat in Sausalito California.  It became the first ever posthumous #1 hit in the USA.

OUR FIRST TRIP TO KNOXVILLE     (Mark)

We decided to take a short trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, as Cheri had a quilt show she wanted to see.  We decided to take the Mini Cooper rather than the travel trailer and truck.  As we settled into the AirBnB I was watching the clouds build up to the east of us.

We reserved a cute little place.

I wish I had been able to get a picture of this ornate framed poster that didn't reflect the lighting, but it is still beautiful and representative of the many instruments at the Sigal Music Museum in Greenville, South Carolina.

I was standing in front of a musical instrument that was actually played by Mozart; it brought on a feeling of history that is hard to explain.  If you are in Greenville, South Carolina, you can see this harpsichord, and a tremendous collection of other musical instruments.
