Tupelo, Mississippi, located along the Mobile and Ohio railroads, is home to about 40,000 residents and the county seat for Lee County. It is a central hub for the northern portion of the state and the sixth largest city in Mississippi.

My absolute favorite stop here was the Laurel Mercantile Scent Library. This map was behind the cash register. We all remember the Astoria Settlement (Oregon) and the Florida Treaty . . . don’t we?
I’ve been a fan of the HGTV show Home Town since its inception, so being able to head back to North Carolina through Laurel, Mississippi was a great opportunity.
Laurel, Mississippi is home to the oldest art museum in Mississippi. Approximately 18,000 people live in town, and it is the county seat for Jones County. In 1881 the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad was laid down, and in 1882 the town started growing around the railroad. The main reason for the town was a primitive sawmill, which processed the native longleaf yellow pine.
Happy New Year to everyone. Not many photos today as we were traveling from Alexiandria, LA to Laurel, MS. There was a very dramatic difference in geography crossing the Mississippi River on Highway 84, heading east. The Louisiana side is low and muddy everywhere, not paved or graveled. The Mississippi side is the city of Natchez, built on high bluffs that keep the river at bay. The terrain immediately becomes rolling hills with evergreen and some hardwood forest.
