Members of the "stadium" quilt guild that I belong to trekked to the northwest corner of the state last week to quilt in a lovely mountain lodge, located in Valle Crucis, N.C.

Our temporary house and the house we are working on to move to are a quarter-mile apart on the same cul-de-sac, so we just refer to the new one as "09" (the last two numbers in the new address).
"09" is how we refer to our pending house, as opposed to "40," where we are living now, since the houses are a quarter-mile apart, and have same two beginning address numbers.
So I "teased" the other day that we are under contract to buy our permanent home. Here is a picture of it now, and after the jump, an inspiration picture, showing what we want it to look like.
So Mark told you about our AirBnB experience. Fun! (Not.) The bigger surprise than the torrential rain and thunder, which we've experienced pretty regularly here in Winston-Salem, was how delightful downtown Knoxville is. (Pictures Credit: DowntownKnoxville.org and VisitKnoxville.com.)
I got so many pretty pictures of Elkin that I had to put up a third post.
On HGTV's Home Town Takeover, Ben and Erin Napier talked about the value of murals in developing a town's pride, and built a structure to locate a new farmers' market. I don't know if Elkin was ahead of the curve or jumped in shortly after, but they are clearly in agreement. Elkin has interesting history in the Revolutionary War. The town square was used as a collection and gathering point for the Overmountain Men, Patriots who gathered here and then marched to battle. The most noted battle was at Kings Mountain. After marching 30 miles at night, the Overmountain Men joined with other Patriots to decisively defeat the British and Loyalists.
Mark and I headed out to Elkin for a couple of days, to see whether it might be somewhere we would like to live.
It might be too small for day-to-day living, but it is certainly is photogenic; Mark and I are going to be posting two or three times with our pictures from this town an hour or so from the Blue Ridge Mountains, with a great vibe! Thursday we took a trip to Pinehurst and Southern Pines, considering it as a place for our "permanent" home.
Despite the fact that Pinehurst is the home of one of the most famous golf courses used as sites for the U.S. Golf Open, it is surprisingly waaaay off the beaten path. On our way from the closest freeway, we stopped at this lovely fruit stand and homemade ice cream shop, Ben's Ice Cream at Kalawi Farm in Eagle Springs. I highly recommend Ben's banana ice cream. I never even choose banana, but this was great! |
