CARTOON ART MUSEUM     (Cheri)

I was a little dubious about going to the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco.

It's possible that we dropped by there on some earlier trip - at a different location, if so - and that there was an exhibit focused entirely on younger artists.  The earlier exhibit didn't do it for me, but the Museum is literally about five steps from Real Old Paper, which we were heading for (link here if you missed it).

Also it's located on Fisherman's Wharf, which doesn't scream "somewhere you want to linger for hours" to me.   I'm glad we went, because we had a good time.  The Museum also has a substantial reading room and a nice gift store.

Most of the Museum's space this time was filled with an exhibit called Sunday Funnies.  Since it has been in existence for 40 years, they were able to pull together a history of the funnies from its permanent collection.

The panel above was from Grace Drayton's 1913 cartoon Dimples:

We didn't take any lengthy walks this visit to the City - my feet were bothering me - but this made us remember the stairway-streets that we often tour:

(No, I don't understand why the piece is entitled "Playboy," either!)

I wish I'd seen an explanation of the markup on this Cathy strip:

For coloration, maybe?  It would be interesting to see an exhibit about the process of creating a strip:  any automation used, how much is left to the newspaper and/or syndicator, etc.

Finally, something from one of our favorite more-current comics:

Thank you for sharing this .

I was not allowed to read the comics as a child. True!

These are not familiar to me.

I always thought the reason my mother didn't "get" cartoons was because she wasn't allowed to either. Then I read a slightly off-topic paragraph in a book about Michaelangelo, which discussed a result of certain strokes, I think it was. All of the personality characteristics matched up; I think it was just genetic with her.

Hey Bev, The Museum serves a lot of audiences, so be sure to check out the current exhibits before you go. Some are very experimental (to my eyes).
