Brian Wilson was a major part of the San Francisco Giants' 2010 incredible season, leading to their first World Series win since moving to California. As I mentioned yesterday, I saw this in the stairwell at Green Apple Books, where it fits right into the vintage-SF vibe. If you follow Giants baseball, you know that Wilson could easily be have been called The Freak, rather than The Beard, but Tim Lincecum had that moniker already. (But check out this article about Lincecum's own brand of freak.) Anyway, Brian Wilson's beard was legend. Wilson's personality has a section of its own on Wikipedia, something I've never seen before. You don't have to know much about it to appreciate these portions of the poster, which was produced by McSweeney's. If you've gotten this far in the post, you'll probably love this short story by Dave Eggers, presumably a first-person report by The Beard (the hairy portion, not the entire person), about how he was recruited for this job.
As you can tell, this San Francisco vacation of ours involves lots of downtime and plenty of mental invitations to the peculiar. Here is one more, unrelated to anything else in this post: "A Parent's Typical Day, as Envisioned by My Child's Preschool," by Ruyi Wen. It's longish, but you'll want to read at least as far as the author's description of her profession. Cheers!
