If you travel the very Northern portion of California's Highway 101, you get used to seeing the Benbow Inn, and thinking "One day I'll find out more about that, or stay there," just before you get to Garberville. Mark and I did stay for one night years ago, probably for an anniversary, and were lucky enough to stay again last night, as we traveled to see several relatives that we haven't seen for too long. Although it not designed by Julia Morgan, as I had thought, it was built in that same era, and the interior shares some characteristics with her works. If we'd had more time, I would have sat down at the puzzle table: or taken a book and lounged in the so-quiet, feast-for-your-eyes back grounds: I liked the English-style transportation themed art in our room and the halls: The Inn isn't a super budget-friendly option, so the next time we come through, we may park our trailer in the very nice nearby KOA, which is right on the river, and Mark would enjoy the nine-hole golf course: After we picked up coffee in Garberville (popoulation about 913) on our way out of the area, Mark told me about stopping in town on a motorcycle tour of the North State many years ago. There was some type of festival going on, with lots of tables set up in parking lots and people milling around, carrying tomato plants. Then it occurred to him . . . Garbervile is in Humboldt County, and those plants were going to be the beginning of beloved crops, but certainly not tomatoes! I have driven past Benbow Inn several times and know it is beloved by many and has a long history. Thank you for the "inside information" and your photographs. Too bad you decided against some tomato plants for your garden. Safe travels.
