ATLANTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM     (Mark)

If you have been following the blog for more than a year this title may look familiar.  Last year I spent one day at the Museum and ended up with three separate posts.

This year Cheri and I spent two days at the Museum.  This post, and the ones following it, will have all new information.

The advertisement above and the one below are for the same appliance.  They are quite different in style and presentation though.  I am not sure which one will appeal more to you.
Picture
Both of the advertisements are for this modern appliance.  A refrigerator that does not require drain hoses!  And it does not require oiling.  And it runs on electricity, how modern.

You can walk into the hall and use this modern device to talk with your friends about your new refrigerator.  That is if they also have one of these in the hallway in their house.  In the early 1930’s you had no expectation of everyone having a phone.

Or, if you were quite flush, you might have a small room for talking on the telephone:

When we saw this, the docent laughed and said “This was for the days when you didn’t want people to hear your telephone conversations!”

At our physical therapy clinic we always had a puzzle working on the table in the waiting room.  But I never saw anyone quite this dressed up working it:

(This was from a magazine article written by one of the designers of the Swan House, which is on the Society's grounds.)

In the Bobby Jones exhibit they have a number of books written by Jones.  This one is about ¾ the size of an iPhone!

Up into the 1950’s, a substantial number of people in the Atlanta area still lived in rural agricultural areas.  They would not have needed this pamphlet.  But for those in the suburbs it was probably helpful.
Picture
The last photo is not an exhibit; it is the jacket a college student was wearing.  She was touring the museum, but she was very accommodating about letting me get a picture.

I really like the attitude!

Thank you! I liked the saying on the back of the jacket, too.

This blog reminded me of party lines when I was a child.

Yeah, Marian, we had one for a short time when we moved to the country in the 70s. The docent's comment made me laugh because the way she said it emphasized that it seems like everyone *wants* you to hear their conversations now!

The party line was custom made for eavesdropping, obviously you would need to be circumspect when using one...
