I have a bunch of new portrait quilts to feature here in future days/weeks, but today just a couple of dogs are joining us, also courtesy of the Mancuso Brothers' quilt show in Greenville.
The first is a gentle boy, making his way around the internet: If having a large city park right next to the historical downtown appeals to you, Greer, South Carolina should be on your list to visit.
We came to Greenville, South Carolina for the first regional quilt show produced by the Mancuso Brothers in this area. I've been attending their Pacific International Quilt Show, in Santa Clara, for something like 20 years.
This show was supposed to be inaugurated in 2020, but we all know how that went. This first post will be about a selection of black and white quilts from the larger exhibit. A little ways away from Winston-Salem, and not far from Pilot Rock, is the remnants of a little town.
I got so many pretty pictures of Elkin that I had to put up a third post.
On HGTV's Home Town Takeover, Ben and Erin Napier talked about the value of murals in developing a town's pride, and built a structure to locate a new farmers' market. I don't know if Elkin was ahead of the curve or jumped in shortly after, but they are clearly in agreement. Elkin has interesting history in the Revolutionary War. The town square was used as a collection and gathering point for the Overmountain Men, Patriots who gathered here and then marched to battle. The most noted battle was at Kings Mountain. After marching 30 miles at night, the Overmountain Men joined with other Patriots to decisively defeat the British and Loyalists.
Mark and I headed out to Elkin for a couple of days, to see whether it might be somewhere we would like to live.
It might be too small for day-to-day living, but it is certainly is photogenic; Mark and I are going to be posting two or three times with our pictures from this town an hour or so from the Blue Ridge Mountains, with a great vibe! I have always wanted to attend a film festival, but have never had the time. I think there have been festivals in the Monterey/Carmel area, but even that was tough to manage. What a thrill to discover that there is a full-fledged annual festival here in Winston-Salem, running from April 21 through May 1!
The trailer is hitched to the truck, the cats are in their carrier in the truck, and we are ready to go.
