I miss my Monterey book club, and when I say my “Monterey book club,” I mean the patients that I chatted with at the Pacific Physical Therapy counter. We didn’t get together at the same time, and there was little in the way of baked goods and no wine, but I had a great group of rotating patient friends that shared book recommendations with me before and after their therapy appointments.
I finished Delicious! A Novel, by Ruth Reichl, during our trip to Atlanta, on a day that was too windy to get out and see local quilt shops.

Just a couple of miles west of Hickory, NC, is where we stayed for a few days this week. The trailer is backed into a spot just a few feet from a little river, a very peaceful place with lots of birds singing. This is the view to the one side:
Thursday we took a trip to Pinehurst and Southern Pines, considering it as a place for our "permanent" home.
Despite the fact that Pinehurst is the home of one of the most famous golf courses used as sites for the U.S. Golf Open, it is surprisingly waaaay off the beaten path. On our way from the closest freeway, we stopped at this lovely fruit stand and homemade ice cream shop, Ben's Ice Cream at Kalawi Farm in Eagle Springs. I highly recommend Ben's banana ice cream. I never even choose banana, but this was great! We went on a little different type of trip yesterday. Instead of loading up the truck and trailer, we threw an overnight bag into the back of the Mini and went driving. We had a couple of places we wanted to see, and Cheri had a map in her lap, so we wandered. Turned out we did not need the overnight bag as we ended up back at home early evening.
We started off with the intention of seeing the Art in Bloom exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art. We did not have tickets in hand, which turned out to be a problem as the exhibit sells out well in advance. We have it on the schedule for next year . . .
We really wanted to see this one and to be able to compare it to the DeYoung Museum show in San Francisco in June. Cheri is planning on attending that exhibit again this year. Since we were at an art exhibit: If you are interested at all in trains, or history, or just big machines and you are in the Atlanta area you should plan on spending some time here. The staff working at the museum are very friendly and happy to talk with you about any of the interesting aspects of trains on display. So if you want to know more about the
The RV park where we stayed for the last several days had a couple of fishing lakes. Since this one had a couple of fountains, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a natural lake. Even if we'd had fishing tackle, we wouldn't have been out seeking our dinner. The wind was notable, gusting up to 45 mph last night.
What caught my attention was the vehicles parked near us. I had the chance to spend most of the afternoon taking a walk around a wonderful little town in Georgia. You forget the huge city of Atlanta surrounds you when you are in Norcross. (We were astounded to learn that the Atlanta Metropolitan Area is more than three times the size of the San Jose Metropolitan Area.)
If you are in Atlanta You should consider taking at least part of the day to go to the Delta Air Museum. They have exhibits the whole family can enjoy.
We didn't get to spend much time in Phoebus, which is now a part of Hampton, and will definitely be going back to see more.
The commercial portion of Phoebus seems to be primarily a hipster hangout now, but the location has a substantial and important history. Just a little bit from Wikipedia: Spring has truly sprung in Pfafftown, North Carolina! Today was a sunny 74 degrees with a gentle breeze. All sorts of birds have been serenading us all day long, a truly fine day. The daffodils sprinkled throughout the fence line and around the trees are making an appearance.
