No, not ours! As I mentioned, Mark and I attended the Annie Liebovitz exhibit at Charlotte's Mint Museum a few days ago. One of the fun results of Liebovitz' working for somewhat literary magazines was the wide range of her subjects, for example Eudora Welty, above. And then there were these pictures. You can never judge a book by its package, can you? I took a couple of classes from Ruth McDowell years ago, and was lucky to attend several of her lectures. She was kind of frumpy, a single mother, and probably had to overcome substantial shyness to perform the public part of her profession. I always figured that her neighbors would have been stunned to learn that she was a rock star in the quilting world. The exhibit included several portraits of musicians, including Joan Baez: James Taylor and family: and Willie Nelson: Even before I read the label for the set of photographs that included the one below, I knew that it was Mick Jagger in the phone booth, because I had seen him in the same shirt in the set of in-automobile photos that I included in my earlier post about this exhibit. Maybe this was the Mercedes-Benz that Janis Joplin was wanting? In any case, what a different life, when even touring celebrities had to find a spot on the side of the road to call home, approve a contract, get lodging for the night! We weren't positive at first that this was a photo of both Williams sisters: but there was no mistaking either Venus or Serena here: I would like to know if Oprah ever has a bad portrait. I loved Liebovitz's dedication to driving for hours down the length of California. Mark enjoyed the snaps that you see after this narrative (which were difficult to record, given the angle of the case they were in). Closing with more from Liebovitz on the origins of her love of driving. Annie Liebovitz' work will be on exhibit at the Mint Museum through August 31, 2025.
