A DAY OF ART & PIZZA     (Cheri)

There are so many posts that we want to get up onto the blog!

The blog was down for at least a couple of weeks, and we were on a trip, so now we have an overflow of experiences to share.

For those of you who aren't into quilts, I'll start with the pizza shop that we ate at towards the end of our day today.

Some time ago we drove by Star Pizza in Madison, NC at night.  It glowed in the dark, and we put it onto our "come-back" list.  I love the look both inside and outside - like my vision of parts of New Jersey.

We often drive a little over an hour to the Piedmont Arts Association in Martinsville, Virginia, and make sure we follow its schedule for future exhibits.  Today we went to see The Art of the Quilt:  ex·per·i·ment, an international invitational exhibit.

Since the theme was broad, the selection of quilts was, too.  My two favorites could hardly have been different.  The first was primarily composed of painted canvas, which was cut apart and re-combined after painting:

I love how paint reflects three different ways off of each thread in canvas.

I am a very enthusiastic collector of vintage textiles of all sorts, and was so excited to see the linens and buttons in this quilt:

This quilt, and another in the exhibit by the same quilter, intrigued me:

Did the quilter make the woodcuts too, or was she lucky in finding them?

This artist's digital, choices of solid fabrics, and paint artistry is something that I would like to do:

This next quilt tore at our hearts.  I've placed the artist statement first so that you'll understand why.

Finally, local quilters will be interested in the third paragraph of the curator's note about this quilt, which I believe was brought in by local quilters that put on a concurrent exhibit in the building.

Thank you for your thoughtful picks of quilts from the exhibition, Cheri! Each of them is unique, like nothing I've seen before,
From reconstructed canvas painting, I see birds, flowers, maybe angels...and you've shown that while I keep saving my Grandmother's handmade laces and crochet, and my Mother's buttons, I'm not the only one!
You have a special touch in posting to us!
Wishing you a bright and merry holiday,
Laurie

Lovely, Laurie! I wish I'd known that you saved those when we lived in Monterey; you could have shown them to me. Grins!

Hello Cheri,

Thank you for sharing these pictures such original different quilts with us. A canvas painted quilt of bright colors, amazing. The family quilt of the father that died at such a young age meant so much to me and brought back memories of my father. All the quilts were amazing in different ways.

I would like to thank you and Mark for continuing to share your travels and interesting places you have visited. I look forward to seeing your blogs. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Southern California.
Denise

Thanks for letting us know that you enjoy the blog, Denise . . . it's so nice to hear!

I know that the teacher that taught the canvas-painted quilts course is in California. Poor timing; I might have sought out one of her courses when living there if I'd known.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. Here is the URL of an earlier blog post, actually from another show at the same museum, which had another striking tribute to a father: https://www.theyounglovereport.com/blog/more-from-the-art-of-the-quilt-cheri.
